WinZip, the popular zip utility for file compression, encryption, and backup, has been updated to fully support Windows 8 and is also available to download from the Windows Store. WinZip is one of the first three desktop applications to appear in the Windows Store.
Users who have used WinZip probably know the ability of this software. With WinZip one can zip/unzip files, compress files, split large files, backup files, and share data. The latest version comes with a new ultra-fast zip engine and supports all major compression file formats, including RAR, 7Z, ISO, TBZ, CAB, TBZ, and IMG.
The ribbon user interface, inspired from Microsoft Office, lets you quickly access all tools and options. Just like in Office, you can even pin frequently used buttons to the quick access toolbar. New archive, open archive, new WinZip job, new zip file on CD or DVD appear when you pin the program to the Taskbar in Windows 7 and Windows 8.
Another interesting feature available in this version of the software is sharing feature. With the help of WinZip you can send up to 2GB file using your own email and also share files on Facebook using the new ZipShare Facebook service. Simply click ZipSend icon in the WinZip ribbon and select the files that you want to send and then click Zip button to share a large files with your friends and family.
Options in the Backup tab of ribbon allow you quickly backup documents folder, documents library, e-mail, desktop, favourites, and pictures library. One can also create a new job to automatically backup a folder using the create new backup function.
Please note that the WinZip setup tries to install AVG Security Toolbar and sets AVG secure search as your browser homepage.
To avoid installing the toolbar, please choose custom installation during the setup and uncheck “Set, keep and protect AVG Secure Search as my homepage”, “Set, keep and protect AVG Secure Search as my default search provider” and “Install AVG Security Toolbar” options.
